A Wellsboro man is facing charges after he allegedly engaged in a physical altercation with a Wellsboro police officer on Monday, April 25th.

According to police, 30-year-old Merle S. Cole was discovered laying beside East Avenue and Plaza Lane in Wellsboro, Tioga Publishing reported. The police officer contacted the prison to see if Cole was on work release. Then, Cole allegedly pushed the officer and hit his hand. In order to bring Cole under control, the officer used a taser. The officer handcuffed Cole, and then Cole allegedly headbutted the officer’s chin. The officer used a taser once more in order to control Cole. Additional police officers assisted the officer in placing Cole in the patrol vehicle while Cole allegedly struggled some more.

Once at the prison, Cole allegedly kept struggling. Eight people held Cole down as he was put in a restraint chair. Cole was allegedly under the influence during the altercation with the officer, but he refused to get a blood alcohol test.
